Almotamar.net - The UN Security Council has reviewed the first report of the Sanctions Committee concerning Yemen set up last February to support the political process in Yemen
In a session held on Friday evening, Raimonda Murmokaite, the Lithuanian Permanent Representative to the UN and Chair of the Sanctions Committee, briefed the Council on the activities of the Committee.
Last February, the Security Council set up a sanctions regime that includes an asset freeze and travel ban against peace spoilers and human rights abusers to be designated by the Sanctions Committee. A four-member Panel of Experts will also be established to help the Committee carry out its mandate.
Three members of the Panel of Experts have been assigned, and the consultation is going on currently for assigning the fourth one, Murmokaite told media after the session.
The three experts visited New York during the past few weeks and met with Yemen and the GCC countries' delegates to the UN, she said.
It is scheduled that the experts will visit Yemen in the near future in order to investigate on the ground the information the Committee has already received. The experts will review their finding with Sanctions Committee before June 25, Murmokaite said.
The Security Committee has studied reports from INTERPOL about al-Qaeda and its allies in Yemen, she said, adding some actions would be taken in this regard in the near future.
She underlined that the Committee intends to deal with full transparency and participation with those involved in the Committee.
