almotamar.net - The United Nations Security Council held an urgent meeting on Monday on the political transition and the latest developments in Yemen.
The meeting, chaired by the Security Council President, Maria Cristina Perceval (Argentina), was briefed by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Yemen, Jamal Benomar.
Perceval made a press statement, on behalf of Security Council members following the consultations on the situation in Yemen, saying that the members of the Security Council have heard a sobering update from Benomar on the current political and security situation in Yemen.
"Council members expressed their deep concern about the latest developments," she said.
"The Security Council condemned the growing number of terrorist attacks carried out or sponsored by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and expressed their determination to address this threat," she said.
The members of the Security Council made clear their "strong support for President Hadi and his efforts to implement the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative and its Implementation Mechanism and the Peace and National Partnership Agreement."
"The Security Council urges all parties to implement the Peace and National Partnership Agreement in its entirety, in a context of national dialogue and inclusion.
She said the council has welcomed the nomination of Khaled Bahah as the new prime minister, and urged the Yemeni authorities to "expedite the process of reforms, including army and security sector reform."
Benomar briefed members of the Security Council that the actions of spoilers are threatening the peace, security and stability of Yemen, Perceval said.
"So members of the Security Council recalled the provisions of resolution 2140 (2014), where sanctions could be taken against such individuals, and agreed to consider urgently evidence provided to them with a view to possible designations of those who threaten the peace, security and stability of Yemen," she added.
On his hand, Benomar said in a press statement that "members of the council are all concerned about the dangers facing the transition."
"I told the Security Council that the transition is at risk of collapsing, and explained that implementation of the Peace and National Partnership Agreement is the only way forward. The Agreement is all based on the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and provides Yemen’s best hope to overcome the current crisis," he said.
"I further told the council that the UN will remain engaged and committed to assisting with the implementation of the Agreement. I hope that all sides will cooperate in good faith to move the transition forward," he added.
"I left this meeting convinced that the Security Council will spare no efforts to support the Yemeni people in their legitimate pursuit of peaceful change," Benomar said.
