Almotamar.net - The Yemeni foreign ministry has shown its anxiety concerning the big challenges it has become facing in the current time at the economic, security and social levels because of continuation of the increase in the flow of refuges from countries of the Horn of Africa into the Yemeni territories lately, especially from Somalia.
Foreign Undersecretary for Arab, African and Asian Affairs ambassador Ali Mohammed said averages of smuggling refugees from the Horn of Africa across Aden Gulf doubled threefold last August compared to the same period in 2007.
He added that according to report of the High Commission in Sana that the operations of smuggling refugees to Yemen via the sea involved the death of hundreds if not thousands of in drowning in the sea because of the unsafe smuggling operations carried out by human merchants of pirates.
26september.net website quoting al-Ayashi as appealing for the international community, organisations, the states and parties in the agreement of refuge s affairs for the necessity of shouldering today joint and just responsibilities regarding this humanitarian issue and to take into their consideration bearing the responsibility with Yemen for this problem , especially the neighbouring countries and parties of the international agreement , the problems of refuge including accepting the refugees on their territories in accordance with just agreements to be reached in this regard.
The Foreign Undersecretary stressed that international organisations must cooperate with the High Commission.
During the first week of this October the Yemeni security authorities registered 1038 new African migrants, among them 276 women and eight children. The group included 66 Ethiopians and the rest Somalis. Also, 90 of the refugees died offshore Yemeni coasts during the same period while the Yemeni Coast Guard captured ten boats of smugglers.
It is worth mentioning that Yemen has appealed on more than world occasion the international community to stand by it to help it deal with the problem of the Somali refugees whose migration is increasing year after year as they flee the ongoing war in Somalia and that constitute pressure on Yemen's resources.
