Almotamar.net - Assistant Secretary General of the General People’s Congress (GPC) for Information Sector Dr Ahmed Ubeid Bin Daghr has said the day of electing President Ali Abdullah Saleh as President of the Republic of Yemen on 17 July 1978 represents an important stage in Yemen’s contemporary history because the post of president at that time was fraught with dangers and accepting the post of president was a sacrifice.

In an interview to Al-Mithaq newspaper, organ of the GPC to be published next Monday, Dr Bin Daghr it was surely a sacrifice for the homeland and the President accepted it despite his knowing it was not an easy task. He was aware there were real and big difficulties in the country, most important of which was the political and security stability.

Due to his understanding of the reality at that time the President was able to contain the situation and gave the presidency establishment a big amount of stability and secures it against any possible disturbance during the term of his presidency that has extended until now, Bin Daghr said.

On what the term of President Saleh and what it has witnessed of the transfer from conflicts to stability , dialogue, democracy and national alignment in the form of the General People’s Congress , Dr Bin Daghr said the stage of the GPC was following a previous one . When the President assumed power the situations in the middle areas of the country were disturbed and there was something almost similar to a civil war and an amount of sabotage and aggression on citizens so he had to deal with that reality in an objective and serious manner.

The idea of establishing the GPC in August 1982 was a creative one in the circumstances of Yemen at that time and the aim of it was the establishment of a greater amount of national accord on major issues and securing a state of stability which began in the era of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. He added that the idea of founding the GPC was part of the President’s democratic thinking.
On the accomplishments the President had achieved Dr Bin Daghr said President Saleh effected a great change in Yemen, he has achieved political stability, established a form of democracy, i.e. the GPC, founded the democratic cooperative work and founded an amount of development. Those changes permitted him to advance towards the project of unity which is in fact the touchstone for any patriot.
